Lisa Peterson

Lisa PetersonLisa was a competitive gymnast until age 12, and then made a change to classical ballet. She auditioned for the Joffrey Ballet satellite school in her home town of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and studied under the tutelage of Robert Essner and Chartell Arthur.

While in high school she was on the school’s dance team for four years, captain of the team for her Jr and Sr year, and led her team to win the state championship for four straight years. Her Senior year in high school she was chosen by her team to represent them as a soloist performing her original choreography, and won the national title in jazz/acro. While in school she performed in her school/community productions of Gypsy, Sweet Charity, Grease, My Fair Lady and Fiddler on the Roof.

While in college majoring in math and chemistry, she earned a spot in the University of Michigan School of Dance, and for four years she studied ballet and jazz at the University of Michigan. In college she studied abroad in France, and took advanced pointe’ and ballet at Tours University.

After college, Lisa joined the Peace Corps and went to Africa for 2 1/2 years, followed by backpacking thruough Asia. All of this gave her the opportunity to study West African dance and Indian dance (in Jaipur, Rajasthan India) learning authentic dances done by indigenous people.

Once back in the U.S., she had four children and worked as a chimist. She continues to take classes and studies with Georgia Amdahl of the St. Paul Chamber Ballet, Janet Smith of the Minnesota Dance Theater and Eric Sanborn of the Metropolitan Ballet. She is a great asset to Northland!
